After the assassination of Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards anti-Sikh riots erupted in New Delhi. Armed mobs entered Sikh neighbourhoods, killing Sikhs indiscriminately and destroying their shops and houses. They lynched Sikhs, burnt them alive, Sikh women were gang-raped.
